Christian Funerals — Perth & South West WA

A funeral that honours
faith and life equally

For Christian families, a funeral is more than a farewell. It is an act of worship, a declaration of hope, and a gathering of community to grieve together and point toward the promise of resurrection. At Greenfields, faith isn't something we accommodate — it's something we share.

"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die."

John 11:25

Greenfields Funerals was founded on Christian values and remains a family-owned, faith-directed business. Our director Paul is an active member of The Salvation Army. When you call us to arrange a Christian funeral, you're speaking to someone who understands what that means — not just professionally, but personally. We know the hymns. We understand the liturgy. We believe in the hope you're holding onto.

Our Commitment

We work with families across all Christian denominations — Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, Baptist, Pentecostal, Orthodox, Lutheran, and more. Whatever your tradition, we will serve your family with genuine understanding and respect for your faith. We coordinate with your minister, your church, and your community so that you can focus on being present.

What a Christian funeral in Perth typically includes

While every denomination carries its own traditions, most Christian funerals in Perth share these core spiritual elements. We work with your minister and family to shape each one around the person you've lost and the faith they held.

Scripture Readings

Passages of comfort and hope, often chosen by the family or minister. Common choices include Psalm 23, John 14:1–6, Romans 8:38–39, 1 Corinthians 15, and Revelation 21:1–4. We can help families who aren't sure which passages to choose.

Hymns & Worship

Congregational singing is a hallmark of Christian funerals. Whether traditional hymns — Amazing Grace, Abide With Me, How Great Thou Art — or contemporary worship songs, music expresses the community's shared faith and gives people something to hold onto.

Sermon or Homily

The minister speaks about the Christian hope of eternal life, usually weaving in reflections on the person's faith journey. For families without a regular minister, we can recommend clergy experienced in funeral services who will treat your family with genuine warmth.

Eulogies & Tributes

Family and friends share memories, stories, and reflections on the person's life and faith. Some churches incorporate tributes into the service; others prefer a separate reception. We can advise on what works best for your tradition and your family's wishes.

Prayer

Prayers of thanksgiving for the person's life, prayers of comfort for those who are grieving, and prayers committing the person into God's care. These prayers carry the theological heart of a Christian funeral and bring the congregation together in a shared act of faith.

Committal

The final act — whether at the graveside or before cremation — where the body is committed with words of confident hope. "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" spoken in the context of resurrection faith is among the most profound moments of a Christian funeral.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

John 14:1–3

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; I am going there to prepare a place for you.

Romans 8:38–39

Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth — will be able to separate us from the love of God.

1 Corinthians 15:54

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: Death has been swallowed up in victory.

Christian funerals across every tradition

We've served families across every Christian tradition in Perth and South West WA. Each denomination carries its own liturgy, its own rituals, and its own understanding of how a funeral should be conducted. We know the differences and work within them.

Catholic

A Catholic funeral typically involves three stages: the Vigil (a prayer service, often the evening before), the Funeral Mass at the parish church with the Eucharist, and the Rite of Committal at the cemetery or crematorium. A priest presides throughout. We coordinate closely with the parish office and are experienced with the full Catholic rite.

Anglican

The service follows the Book of Common Prayer or contemporary alternatives. It may be held at the church or a cemetery chapel. The minister leads the liturgy with readings, hymns, and prayers. Communion may be offered. Anglican funerals balance formal liturgy with space for personal tributes.

Salvation Army

Salvation Army funerals reflect the Corps' emphasis on practical faith, community, and the certainty of resurrection. Services are often joyful expressions of a life given in service. Brass band music, congregational singing, and a strong sense of family and fellowship are common. As active Salvos ourselves, we understand this tradition from the inside.

Uniting Church

Flexible and family-inclusive. Services may be held at the church or a neutral venue. The minister works with the family to shape a service that reflects both faith and personality. Music choices are often diverse, and the atmosphere tends to be warm and conversational alongside the liturgical elements.

Baptist & Pentecostal

These services often have a warm, personal character. The pastor typically leads with a balance of scriptural teaching and personal tributes. Contemporary worship music is common. The atmosphere is often one of celebration alongside grief — a genuine expression of resurrection hope rather than just mourning.

Orthodox

Greek and Russian Orthodox funerals follow ancient liturgical traditions with specific prayers, incense, and rituals. The priest leads the entire service according to the church's rites. Burial is traditionally preferred over cremation. We work closely with the priest to ensure every requirement of the rite is observed with care and accuracy.

Other Traditions

We've worked with Lutheran, Presbyterian, Seventh-day Adventist, Churches of Christ, Wesleyan, and independent evangelical churches across Perth and South West WA. Whatever your tradition, we'll coordinate respectfully with your minister and honour the practices your family holds dear.

Working alongside your church and minister

Your minister or pastor is usually the best person to lead the funeral service. They know your loved one, they know your family, and they understand your church's traditions. Our role is to support them — not to replace them.

We handle the logistics: coordinating with the venue, managing transport, preparing the order of service, liaising with the cemetery or crematorium, and ensuring everything runs smoothly on the day. Your minister focuses on the pastoral and spiritual elements. Between us, your family can focus on being present.

No regular minister? If your loved one didn't have a regular church or minister, we can recommend clergy who are experienced in conducting Christian funeral services and who will treat your family with genuine warmth — not as a transaction, but as a pastoral responsibility.

Where your service can be held

A Christian funeral in Perth can be held at your church, at a cemetery chapel, or graveside. Each has its own character and we can help you choose what fits your family and your tradition.

Your Church

Many families choose to hold the funeral at their regular place of worship. It's familiar, it's meaningful, and the congregation can attend easily. We coordinate with the church office on timing, access, music, and any specific requirements — including AV, livestreaming, and order of service printing.

Cemetery Chapel

Perth's cemeteries all have chapels suitable for Christian services — Karrakatta, Fremantle, Pinnaroo, and Rockingham Memorial Park. These are particularly practical when cremation or burial follows the service directly.

Graveside Service

For burial services, a graveside-only service can be deeply moving — simple, outdoors, and focused entirely on the committal. Many families choose this for its intimacy. It suits smaller gatherings and traditions where the graveside rite is the central act of farewell.

Two-Location Service

A full service at the church followed by a private committal is a common and practical arrangement. The congregation attends the church service and says goodbye there; the family accompanies the deceased to the committal privately. This works well when the church is central but the cemetery is distant.

Planning your Christian funeral in advance

Many Christian families choose to plan their funeral ahead of time. It's an act of stewardship and consideration — ensuring your family isn't burdened with decisions during grief, and that your service reflects your faith exactly as you'd wish.

With a prepaid funeral plan, you can document your preferred hymns, Scripture readings, minister, church, and any other details that matter to you. Everything is written down, paid for, and honoured when the time comes — removing the guesswork and the financial burden from the people you love.

If you're caring for someone with a serious illness and want to help them plan a funeral that truly reflects their faith and wishes, our Planning With Care guide walks families through every step — including how to document preferences, choose readings, and have the conversations that matter.

Frequently asked questions

Questions Perth families ask us about arranging a Christian funeral.

Does the funeral have to be held at a church?
No. While many Christian families choose their church, the service can be held at a cemetery chapel, a funeral home, or another suitable venue. Your minister can lead a fully Christian service at any location — the faith isn't confined to the building.
Can we have a church service and then cremation?
Absolutely — this is one of the most common arrangements. A full service is held at the church where the congregation can attend and say goodbye, followed by a private cremation. Most Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, and Baptist traditions accept cremation fully. Orthodox families typically prefer burial — your priest can advise on what is appropriate for your tradition.
Is cremation acceptable in the Christian faith?
Most Christian denominations accept cremation, including Catholic (since 1963), Anglican, Uniting, Baptist, and Pentecostal traditions. The Catholic Church permits cremation provided it is not chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine. Some Orthodox traditions prefer burial. If you're uncertain, your minister or priest is the right person to ask — we can also help you think through the options.
What if our loved one didn't have a regular church?
This is more common than you might think. Many people hold a sincere Christian faith without a regular congregation. We can recommend ministers and pastors who are experienced in conducting Christian funerals for families in exactly this situation — they'll treat your family pastorally, not just as a booking.
What does a Christian funeral cost in Perth?
Our pricing is the same regardless of the type of service. A traditional funeral with chapel service starts from $6,950. Church venue fees (if applicable) and the minister's honorarium are separate costs — we'll help you understand these upfront so there are no surprises. See full pricing →
Can you help us choose hymns and readings?
Yes — this is one of the things we genuinely love doing. We can suggest hymns and readings based on your loved one's faith tradition and the passages that meant most to them. We can also prepare a beautifully printed order of service incorporating your chosen Scriptures, hymns, and tributes.
Do you arrange Salvation Army funerals?
Yes — and this is close to our hearts. Our director Paul is an active member of Perth Fortress Corps. We understand Salvation Army funerals from the inside — the music, the values, the community, and the theology. We work regularly with Corps officers across Perth and South West WA.
